LIU Xiaohui

I am a 4-year Bachelor degree student. My major is Electronic Engineering. I graduated in July 2002 from China University of Mining & Technology and obtained Bachelor degree. I am very interested in Communication Systems. Because my English is not good enough to do Master degree course, I am required to do half year’s English course firstly. Thus my study plan is half year’s Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (Semester B) plus one year MSc Electronics (Communication Systems). Totally I will study in UK for one and half year and I will return to China when I finish the study in UK.


My parents are all working in Telecommunication field. Because of this reason, from my childish time, I began to be interested in communication systems. As a result, I majored in Electronic Engineering when I was admitted to my previous China’s university. With China’s economy is developing, communication technology is becoming more and more important in the industry and in daily life. I have realized that my knowledge is not sufficient for my future career. Also, with only a bachelor degree certificate, I am afraid that I am not very competitive to find a good job, compared with so numerous Master degree students. Thus, I decide going to the UK to do a Postgraduate course in Communication Systems. In order to improve my English, I have been studying English since my graduation.


The United Kingdom is one of the leading western countries in electronic technology. UK’s education has a very good reputation in the world. In addition, the length of Master degree course is only one year in the UK whereas it will take three years in China! I think it is a best country to study. University of Hertfordshire is a new and modern university and its Electronics is very famous in the UK. Besides, its study facilities and teaching staff are first class in the UK universities. The location of the university is in very good environment. Considering every aspect, I have decided studying in University of Hertfordshire in the UK.


I will study MSc Electronics (Communication Systems). This course will give me the necessary skills to cope in the world of rapidly developing communications technology. The following two modules are required on this route: Data Communications and Telecommunications. The data communications module will introduce me to advanced data communications concepts and principles together with the operation of the main types of current networking technologies and management issues within the information technology environment. Topics such as wide area network protocols are dealt with using examples taken from the most recent commercial implementations. The telecommunications module includes analogue and digital modulation and demodulation in the presence of noise, transmission lines and electromagnetic antennae and propagation. These topics are developed to cover spread spectrum communication systems, cellular radio, local area wireless network, frequency synthesis and satellite communications systems. Two optional modules will be selected from many subjects. Finally I will also undertake a project, equivalent to four modules.


I have studied in Electronic Engineering for 4 years and got Bachelor degree. My TOEFL score is 493. Although my English is not very good, I believe that I will be able to improve my English well enough to do my Master degree course in half year’s English course in the UK.


It will cost about 260,000RMB to study in UK for one and half year. My parents fully support my study plan. I am the only child in the family, and my parents hope that I can be successful in this field. My parents all earn good salaries and their savings are enough to support my one and half year’s study in the UK. I will go back home as soon as I get the Master degree. I believe that I can be a good engineer in the communication field. Senior engineers, especially those with overseas experience, can earn at least 100,000 RMB per year. So, studying abroad, for my family, is a good investment.


I am a young man, and I am also an ambitious man. University of Hertfordshire is well-known for its excellent reputation in Communication technology in the UK.
